Knights of Columbus Council #5811 Family of the Month Program Update

Family of the Month Program from Brother Mike Mullane, Family Director

When all is said and done, more is said than done.”  -Lou Holtz, former Notre Dame football coach.  While this is true in many circles, it is certainly not the case with the Curran family.  Rob, Kasey, John (6), Tommy (3), and Matt (1) are all active participants in both their family life and being part of the Christ the King community.

“Being part of a Catholic community and giving back are important to us”, says Rob, who is a 3rd Degree Knight- and both he and Kasey lead by example.  It is common to see them around CTK in various roles- acting as chairpersons for the school Auction, Kasey teaching her 3rd year of Religious Education, or Rob participating in Knights events ranging from the Back to School BBQ to the annual St. Patrick’s dinner.  “If you want something done, give it to a busy person”, Rob says.  Busy yes…but also balanced.

While the Curran’s maintain a busy schedule, they make time for family.  Season ticket holders to both the San Francisco Giants and 49ers, the Curran’s are avid fans and enjoyCurran Family Photo regularly seeing their favorite teams in action.  “A perfect day for us might go something like this- in the Fall, I’ll coach John’s Little League team on a Saturday morning and then we’ll head to San Francisco and get ready for the 49ers game.  We have a 5th Wheel Trailer that we take with us, and we’ll spend the night at Candlestick Point.  After getting the trailer set-up, we’ll drive over to St. Paul of the Shipwreck parish and attend Mass, then go out to dinner.  Then we’ll rest up and get ready for the game on Sunday.”

When not at a ballgame, there is usually one taking place in the Curran’s front yard.  John, Tommy and Matt can be seen playing baseball, football or basketball year round.  Rob is right in the action as well, coaching the boys on fundamentals, and also teaching them about teamwork- making sure that John is taking time to help his younger brothers.  “The kids have several older cousins in the area, and we get together regularly with them.  It’s important to help the kids learn how to improve, but just as important to help them learn to help the younger kids”, says Rob who grew up playing baseball at CTK and De La Salle, and is now a member of the CTK Dad’s softball team, “The Padres”.

After a full day of activity, the day winds down with more family time.  Rob and Kasey work together to get the kids fed and bathed, and then Kasey reads to the boys.  BBQing is big in the Curran household, and they feature many specialties ranging from tri-tip to homemade pizzas cooked on the grill.

When asked about who has influenced them, Rob says that many of the Knights are role models for him.  “The guys who do things together as a family- they bring their wives and kids to the events and make them a part of it as well.”

Babe Ruth once said, "The way a team plays as a whole determines its success.”  Based on the way the Curran family plays together and with the CTK community, they are certainly champions.
