Grand Knight's Letter My Brother Knights,
We are in the Dog Days of summer!
The Dog Days were popularly believed to be an evil time "when the seas
boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid,
causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies (sic)"
according to Brady’s Clavis Calendarium,
1813. Today, we associate these
long, sweltering forty days between July 3rd and August 11th
with baseball, BBQs and family vacations. The Officer Installation Dinner was a great success and well
attended by Knights and their families.
Worthy District Deputy T. W. Starkweather and District Warden John
Gonzales presided over the ceremony in Msgr. Wade Hall.
Fr. Brian Timoney led the assembled Knights and guests in opening and
closing prayers. Brother Jim Blair
shared three varieties of his homebrewed beer with us that were outstanding and
enjoyed by all. Thank you to all of
the Knights and their spouses who helped make this event so successful.
Special thanks go to Brother Sam Patti for arriving early for setup and
staying late to clean and close the facility. The close of August brings about the
beginning of the 2010-2011 school year.
The Knights will mark this event by once again partnering with PTG to
host the annual Back-to-School BBQ on Sunday, August 29th.
PGK Jay Becker will coordinate this event on behalf of the Knights.
We plan to prepare food for and serve hundreds of adults and children, so
there will be plenty of hands needed to make this light work.
Please contact Jay at (925) 818-1915 or via email at
scooners@comcast.net
for additional details related to this event and volunteering. The Back-to-School Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for Sunday,
September 12th this year, which is one week later than last year’s
event. The schedule was adjusted to
ensure better attendance by avoiding a conflict with the Labor Day weekend.
Brother Sam Patti will be coordinating this event, so please contact him
at (925) 980-3077 or via email at
sspatti3@yahoo.com for additional information and details regarding
volunteering. This is a family
event, so please feel free to bring your families to participate. Our opening 1st Degree of
the 2010-2011 Columbian Year will be held at our regular business meeting on
Tuesday, September 14th.
Our goal this Columbian Year is to increase our council’s membership by fourteen
Knights, so please contact Membership Director Jim Blair at (925) 639-5924 or
via email at
jblair48@comcast.net with the names of worth
candidates you have recruited. Please remember Father Declan Dean and Sister Maureen Viani
in your prayers during their time of illness.
Please also pray for Brother Joe Plant and his family after the passing
of Joe’s mother, who is Sr. Joanne Gallagher’s sister. As always, please
provide me with your feedback and remember to visit our council’s website at
www.kofcph.org.
Sincerely,
Grand Knight, Council #5811

and has opened it to all fellow Knights.
Please join Brother Jay and others, as your help will be needed and
welcomed, for what will prove to be a fun and existing event. More details to follow shortly.
Preparation for the Back-to-School BBQ will begin at 2:30PM on Aug 28th. The Back-to-School BBQ event is on Aug 29th. Setup and cooking will start at 9:00AM on August 29th. We will need volunteers for both days, so please contact PGK Jay Becker at (925) 818-1915 for more information.
